The Venting Crawl Spaces Myth

Crawl spaces are an afterthought to many homeowners, because they are prone to dampness, flooding, and hosting critters.  While you may never actually go down there, it is not something that should be taken lightly.  If you care about your health and money in your pocket, you should care about your crawl space.  It would seem sensible to air out your damp crawl space on a nice day to dry it out.  However, in this case, the solution is not a solution and is even worse than the problem.  Venting crawl spaces increases energy bills, results in cold floors and drafts, and raises health concerns.

Basement Systems of Indiana’s solution to crawl space humidity is to seal crawl space vents with a CleanSpace vent, use CleanSpace vapor barrier for encapsulation, and install a SaniDry Sedona dehumidifier.  This system will control the indoor environment of your crawl space and ensure that no air will enter the crawl space.  Vents are good for more than letting in hot, wet, or cold air; they can let in water too.  That is why it is our job to transform your nasty crawl space into a cleaner, drier, healthier, and more energy-efficient space.

The humidity and moisture from the outside air also causes rot and mold damage inside the crawl space if vented.  Mold growing inside the crawl space is also growing inside the home due to upward airflow.  Studies show that prolonged exposure to mold can cause asthma, allergies, and other health concerns.  Why spend the extra money on mold remediation and other unnecessary repairs when the problem can be cut off by sealing the crawl space vents?

There are no benefits to venting your crawl space and problems will only add up over time.  Venting your crawl space doesn’t make sense unless the outdoor air is 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a relative humidity of 45%, day and night, year-round.  Properly sealing the crawl space vents permanently will eliminate all your crawl space problems and worries.
